Queensland Urged to Reinstate Water Fluoridation Amid Alarming Rise in Tooth Decay

2025 08/01

A growing number of medical and dental associations in Queensland, Australia, are calling for the statewide reinstatement of water fluoridation in response to a worsening dental health crisis, particularly among children.

According to recent data, the coverage rate of fluoridated water in Queensland has dropped from 90% in 2012 to just around 70% today, contributing to a significant increase in childhood tooth decay, especially in underserved and rural communities.

Health experts argue that community water fluoridation is a proven and cost-effective public health measure that helps strengthen tooth enamel and prevent cavities. The World Health Organization (WHO), the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and leading global dental associations continue to support fluoridation as a safe and equitable way to reduce dental health disparities.

Dr. Sarah Hodge, spokesperson for the Queensland Dental Association, emphasized:

“Tooth decay is a preventable disease. Denying communities access to fluoridated water means denying children a healthier start in life.”

The proposal to restore full fluoridation coverage is gaining attention not only within the healthcare sector, but also among policymakers concerned with public health equity and preventive care strategies. As dental care costs continue to rise globally, fluoridation remains a key pillar in cost-effective oral health management.
